F1 will start in Australia first

Max Verstappen’s pole position at the Formula 1 Australian GP

Dutch driver Max Verstappen of the Red Bull team will start from the front row at the Australian Grand Prix, the third leg of the season in the Formula 1 World Championship.

Verstappen won the top pocket with a time of 1 minute 16.732 seconds in the qualifying laps of the race to be held at Melbourne’s 5.2km Albert Park Track. The 25-year-old took the 22nd pole position of his career.

George Russell (Mercedes), 0.236 seconds behind the Dutch driver, took second place and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), who laps the track 0.372 seconds slower than the leader, took third place.

Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez, who sits second in the championship, lost control of his car in the first session and got stuck in a pool of gravel. The Mexican pilot thus placed himself in 20th place in the qualification.

The 58-lap race will start tomorrow at 08:00 CEST. (AA)
