The Swiss Football Association (SFV) has submitted an application to the European Football Association (UEFA) to host Women’s EURO 2025 in Switzerland. The city of Lucerne will be one of the eight venues: three group games will be played at the Almende football stadium.
The overwhelming majority of the city parliament supported the major event. The European Championships were expected to bring women’s sport to wider prominence and also have a positive impact on equality.
However, a spokesman for the Greens believes that UEFA should contribute more to the event. Therefore, the Green minority rejected the “gag contract” that the “corporate” UEFA had imposed on the city. The mayor of the city, Beat Süsli (SP), responded that, in a general assessment, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
