The Wankdorf curse lives on: St. Gallen gets hit by wheels in Bern

St. Gallen just can’t win at Wankdorf. In the top game against the leader YB there is a brutal 1:5 blow. Although Espen immediately took the lead, YB changed the course of the game within minutes. In the second half, the leader started freestyle, including due to two misses.

The Young Boys are advancing in their field in the Super League. After 5-1 in a top match against St. Gallen, the Bernese are 16 points ahead of their closest pursuer, who is now called Servette again.

A show of force would not be needed. Young Boys dominance in the league has been visible in the table for several weeks now. Still, the home game against St. Gallen was a signal for competition: Rafael Vicki’s team can handle any situation and doesn’t owe their leading position to the snail’s pace of the proposed competition.

St. Gallen was not far behind – at least in the beginning

For a long time, St. Gallen did everything possible to bring down YB. At half-time, the Eastern Swiss also outplayed the designated champions. After 165 seconds, Lukas Gertler made it 1-0 after a corner kick. A little later, Matej Maglica also hit the crossbar – just like before the break Albert Valchi. During the break, Peter Seidler’s wards attacked one after another. If she had used her chances a little better, she could have taken the lead in 45 minutes.

But the Young Boys were steady on pace and, above all, impressively efficient. Cédric Itten equalized with Bern’s first good action after twelve minutes to make it 1-1. And just five minutes later Castriot Imeri made it 2-1. YB made the final decision on the storm run after the side switch. Itten (53′) and Fabian Rieder (66′) from the penalty spot and Christian Fassnacht from a half-shot (62′) ensured a 5-1 lead.

Broken neck penalty

St. Gallen, who briefly sniffed their first victory in Bern since 2005, increasingly lost their line and faith as the game progressed. It annoyed the FCSG that momentum was unfortunately broken in the second half after referee Urs Schneider penalized Gertler for a bad hand after a VAR tip in the 53rd minute. After Itten scored his 11th goal of the season to make it 3-1, a fantastically tight decision was made.

Accordingly, Görtler also disagreed with the referee’s decision after the game: “You can’t always hide behind the rule that your arm was outstretched.” He did not make an active movement and did not prevent a scoring chance. “If the opponents tell me that this is a joke penalty, they have an answer,” Gertler continued.
