Novak Djokovic made history
The Association of Professional Tennis (ATP) announced the classification of the new week in men. Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic broke the record held by German women’s racket Steffi Graf by increasing the number of weeks he spent at the top of the world rankings to 378.
Djokovic, who has won two singles tournaments this season, including the Australian Open, continued to lead with 6,980 points. Sharing the record for the male tennis player who won the most Grand Slam tournaments with 22 championships with Rafael Nadal, Djokovic increased the number of weeks he spent at the top of the world rankings to 378. Thus, the 35-year-old Djokovic broke the record held by Graf, who was at the top of the women’s world rankings for 377 weeks between 1982 and 1999 when she played tennis.
Djokovic is followed by Graf (377), Martina Navratilova (332 weeks), Serena Williams (319), Roger Federer (310) in the list of tennis players who have held the world number 1 title for the longest time.
The Spanish racket Nadal, for his part, fell to 8th place in the ATP ranking with 3,315 points, the lowest in the last 6 years as of 2017.
The men’s world ranking has been determined by the ATP since 1973, and the women’s world ranking since 1975 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). (AA)
