Kenyan athletes win New York marathon

Kenyan Evans Chebet (33) won the 51st New York Marathon in men this year, and Sharon Lokedi (28) from the same country in women.

The winners of the New York City Marathon, which started in Staten Island, crossed Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, and finished in Manhattan’s Central Park, have been announced.

After the Brazilian athlete Daniel Do Nascimento, who was leading the race, collapsed on the ground, Chebet did not let go of the first place despite the hot and humid weather while he was placed in the first place.

The Kenyan athlete, who also won the Boston Marathon held on April 19, completed the marathon in 2 hours 8 minutes 41 seconds.

In the male men’s category, the Ethiopian Shura Kitata took second place with a time of 2 hours 8 minutes 54 seconds, while the Dutchman Abdi Nageeye took third place.

WOMAN SHARON LOKEDI PARTICIPATED FOR THE FIRST TIME AND WAS FIRST

The female winner of the New York Marathon was Sharon Lokedi from the same country, who participated in the race for the first time and reached the finish line in 2 hours 23 minutes and 23 seconds.

In the women’s category, Israeli Lonah Chemtai Salpeter was second with 2 hours 23 minutes 30 seconds, while Ethiopian world champion Gotytom Gebreslase was third.

While the 51st New York Marathon, with participants from 150 countries, took place among the hottest conditions in its history, the temperature in the city exceeded 22 degrees.

The 50th New York Marathon, held in 2021, was won by Kenyan Albert Korir in men and Peres Jepchirchir from the same country in women.

NEW YORK MARATHON

The number of participants in the New York Marathon, which was held for the 51st time this year, exceeded 50 thousand for the first time since the epidemic period, after good weather and the complete removal of the Kovid-19 restrictions.

Starting from Staten Island’s Verrazzano Bridge, the race symbolically passed through all 5 boroughs of New York and ended at the finish line in Manhattan Central Park.

While the New York Marathon was canceled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 outbreak, it was held in 2021 with around 25,000 runners due to restrictions. (AA)
