After a term marked by scandal and controversy, he says he plans to challenge County Supervisor Janice Hahn in the March 2024 primary.
In a Fox 11 interview Tuesday night, Villanueva said he wanted to move the Board of Supervisors back to the middle by challenging Hahn, who has represented the 4th District since 2016.
The provincial government is responsible for the health, safety and welfare of all residents of the province. In that regard, the administration has failed miserably,” Villanueva said. “You just have to watch the news every day. You are overwhelmed by images of violent crimes, robberies and senseless deliberate violence.”
The 4th District, with more than 2 million residents, covers more than 250 square miles in the southern and southeastern portions of the county, and includes the cities of Torrance and Long Beach.

After his election as now-Sheriff Robert Luna, Villanueva frequently clashed with regulators, who controlled the purse strings of his agencies.
He accused them of sabotaging the department in lawsuits by having their lawyers inflate legal costs to take money out of his budget. He attacked them with misogynistic language. Perhaps most memorably, his deputies raided the home of Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, considered one of his fiercest critics.
Now he wants to be her colleague. In the Fox 11 interview, Villanueva said his constituency would be anyone who actually cares about the county, cares about the fact that they’re living in fear.
They are so far left of center that no one can even recognize them, he said of the current administration. They do not represent the will of anyone, let alone the residents of the city

strict.
Supervisors Holly Mitchell and Kathryn Barger are also up for re-election in 2024.
Dave Jacobson, Hahn’s campaign adviser, called Villanueva “a fraud and a failure” in a statement. “The voters in LA County, including District 4, decisively rejected the man known as the Donald Trump of LA County last November because of his incompetence and corruption. LA County became less safe under Villanueva’s administration,” the statement said. “LA County voters will not be fooled again.” This is a developing story and will be updated.
