One topic hung over Biden’s trip to Asia: China’s influence

On the eve of the last day of a four-day visit to India and Vietnam, President Biden emphasized one point: He is not trying to contain China.
“It’s not about containing China; it is about having a stable base in the Indo-Pacific,” the president said as he answered question after question about US-China relations at a news conference in Vietnam.
“We think too much in terms of the Cold War,” Biden later added. “That’s not what it’s about. It’s about generating economic growth and stability in all parts of the world. And that’s what we’re trying to do.”
“I want China to succeed economically, but I want to see them succeed by the rules.”
