Maps of congressional districts previously ruled unconstitutional by the Ohio Supreme Court will be used in 2024 after the Supreme Court rejected legal challenges Thursday against the Republican-drawn districts.

The Ohio voting rights groups that raised the challenges earlier this week dismissed their own lawsuits against the maps drawn by Republicans, saying the unrest is not in the best interests of Ohio voters. The court has ruled several times that the cards are unconstitutional because they unfairly favored the Ohio Republican Party.

The state’s Supreme Court, which has a 4-to-3 Republican majority, has dismissed the cases without comment.

The Ohio Supreme Court rejects statehouse maps drafted by the Republican Party

On Tuesday, they announced they are willing to live with the US House card approved March 2, 2022, and used in last year’s election.

The legal dispute has been going on for two years, with the court rejecting two separate congressional maps and five sets of Statehouse maps describing the Ohio House and Senate districts in Columbus as being gerrymandered in favor of the Republicans.

Despite being deemed unconstitutional prior to the 2022 election, the cards are still in use because Republicans essentially let the clock run after denying the court’s order to write new, fairer cards within the prescribed time frame.

Ohio’s political landscape has only become more conservative over the past few cycles. Both the state House and Senate currently hold supermajorities with the Republican Party. The Republican Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who had cast a decisive vote against cards targeting the Republican Party, retired.
