Willis launched the investigation in February 2021 after news broke that the former president had been recorded on a January 2, 2021 phone call urging Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to find him.

The investigation also focuses on a plan to assemble a roster of fake voters to secretly meet at the Capitol to cast votes for Trump, despite President Joe Biden receiving a majority of the vote in the state won, and to use the competing slates to keep Georgia’s statehood sparked turmoil when Congress met on January 6, 2021 to certify the election results.
A special grand jury that heard evidence in the case for about seven months recommended more than a dozen people for indictment, and her forewoman hinted in a February interview with the New York Times that Trump was one of them. Willis needed approval from a regular grand jury

to file a complaint.
Willis, a Democrat, was reportedly focused on indicting Trump and his associates under Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, which would allow her to prosecute numerous people allegedly involved in a potentially elaborate criminal scheme.
The law is broader than the federal RICO law.
Nearly 20 people have been informed that they could be prosecuted in the investigation.

Security around the Atlanta courthouse has been ramped up in recent weeks. Tuesday law enforcement

close the security gates around the Capitol indefinitely pending possible protests. Protesters gathered outside the state building after Trump lost in 2020.
The indictment of Trump by a Georgia grand jury adds to a growing list of legal troubles during his presidential campaign.
Trump was charged in Washington, D.C., on August 1, following an investigation by Special Counsel Jack Smith into actions Trump and his allies allegedly took to keep him in office despite losing the 2020 election. Indicted Aug. 3 and pleaded not guilty to all four felonies.
Trump is also scheduled to go on trial in New York in March on state charges related to payments allegedly made during the 2016 presidential campaign to cover up an affair with porn actor Stormy Daniels. And he has another trial scheduled for May
