The agricultural debate ends with a succession of mea culpa Related articles

Agriculture Minister Piet Adema (CDA) received enough support yesterday during a debate in the House of Representatives to continue. In his conversation with the House of Representatives, the minister stressed several times that he was disappointed with the state of things. “I would have preferred to be here with a signed and successful agriculture deal,” the minister said. The more important question now is what is the value of a draft agreement that will serve as the basis for the final plans.

It was expected that Adema would struggle during the debate. But according to political journalist Mats Akkerman, the sting soon faded, thanks in part to the minister’s candid and clear answers on the progress of negotiations on an agricultural deal. “We have received a detailed reconstruction from Adema, in which he also talked about the telephone conversations with Sjaak van der Tak (LTO Nederland, ed)”.

“Contains good building blocks that we can continue with”

Only the Chamber no longer allows Adema to speak of an agrarian pact, because it doesn’t exist. As far as the minister is concerned, the agreements made in the draft are a good basis for the new plans that will be presented in September. “It contains good building blocks that we can continue with,” said the minister, who still wants to keep all parties on board.

Abrupt start

Despite a fierce start, even on the nitrogen discussion, the tone of the debate changed pretty quickly, Akkerman says. ‘After all, Adema has already said that she will come up with her plans for her in September. So it’s better to wait than make a lot of drama and tear the minister apart.”
