Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro in court Related articles

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will appear in court today. Justice accuses him of abuse of power and spreading false news. If the Supreme Court agrees, Bolsonaro will not be able to participate in politics for eight years. As a result, he would lose the 2026 presidential election. “People find it very exciting,” says correspondent Wies Ubachs.

Despite the tension, according to Ubachs, it is very calm in Brazil. “It’s really surprising that there is no one on the street today.” Things were even different after last year’s presidential election, when blockades were erected and people camped out in army barracks. “But nothing is actually happening at the moment.”

Abuse of power and sedition

There are a total of sixteen charges against Bolsonaro, including abuse of power, sedition and jewelry smuggling. Today the court will mainly examine the first two.

“In the fastest moment, the judge can already decide today”

Wies Ubachs, correspondent from Brazil

Last year, Bolsonaro questioned the outcome of the election even before the votes were cast. “He has repeatedly suggested that the system with electronic voting machines is susceptible to fraud,” explains Ubachs. ‘He had it taped on state media, while he wasn’t allowed to use it at all as a presidential candidate. This is seen as an abuse of power.’ The judges will also look into the riots that took place this year when Bolsonaro supporters stormed parliament buildings.

Uncertain date pronunciation

It is unclear when the court will rule on Bolsonaro’s case. ‘At the fastest moment, the judge can already decide today,’ explains Ubachs, ‘but it can also be June 29 at the latest. In any case, we are talking about the day here».
