The most important provisions emerged before Jetten’s press conference. For example, the Cabinet will make the purchase of a second-hand electric car cheaper through subsidies and extra money will be allocated to make homes more sustainable, starting with the ‘draughtier houses’ in the ‘most vulnerable neighbourhoods’. Jetten said in an explanation. The biggest blow has to come from making the industry more sustainable.
Added up, all the measures are expected to lead to a further reduction in CO2 emissions of around 22 megatons per year. That’s 13 percent of current emissions, Jetten calculated.
55 percent less
The government’s goal is to reduce emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990, but it is targeting 60%. Calculations by the Dutch Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) have repeatedly shown in recent years that this target was not yet in sight.
