The billion deficit is largely caused by rising interest rates. In addition, the costs for extra reception of asylum seekers in hotels, by the way, are a serious setback for the cabinet. The expensive reception is the result of shortages and previous cuts in regular reception in the asylum chain. Money also needs to be set aside for the ‘debt of honour’ to the victims of the Groningen earthquakes.
Cut
The cabinet is debating the spring memorandum. The plan is to find a solution next week after the Cabinet meeting or no later than April 26, the day before King’s Day. Cuts are not taboo. The cheese-slicer method is being considered, as BNR hears in the corridors of The Hague.
The finance ministry could ask any ministry to make cuts. Kaag is also examining the money that is still on the shelves of the ministries, the so-called “underspending” in the ministries.
