A Democratic-backed judge in Milwaukee won the battle for Wisconsin’s Supreme Court on Tuesday, allowing liberals to take majority control of the court for the first time in 15 years while the fate of the state’s abortion ban awaits.

Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Janet Protasiewicz defeated former Judge Dan Kelly, who previously worked for Republicans and received support from the state’s leading anti-abortion groups. His second loss in a race for a Supreme Court seat in three years.

The new court that will be controlled by liberals 4 to 3 is expected to decide a pending lawsuit challenging the state’s 1849 law banning abortion. Protasiewicz made the issue a focus of her campaign, winning support from Planned Parenthood and other abortion rights groups.

The court is also expected to hear another challenge to legislative maps drawn by the Republicans. Protasiewicz was a critic of the current maps, calling them rigged.

The court came within one vote of overturning President Biden’s victory in the state in 2020, and both major parties are gearing up for another exciting race in 2024.

With so much on the line, the race became the most expensive contest for a state Supreme Court seat in U.S. history. Protasiewicz will begin his 10-year term in August. She replaces outgoing conservative judge Pat Roggensack.
