Trump returns to Facebook after more than two years of ban

Former President Trump has returned to Facebook after a ban of more than two years.

IN THE BACK! Trump posted to the site weeks after his personal account was reactivated. Trump, who is running his third campaign for the White House, also shared an old video clip in which he said, Sorry to keep you waiting. Complicated business.

He posted the same clip to YouTube, which on Friday announced it was also welcoming him back.

Facebook parent Meta had said in January it would reinstate Trump’s personal account in the coming weeks and end the suspension it imposed in the wake of the January 6, 2021 uprising, when Trump supporters forcibly destroyed it. US Capitol stormed in an attempt to stop the peaceful transfer of power.

His access to Facebook and Instagram was restored on February 9, the company confirmed.

The public should be able to hear what their politicians say good, bad and ugly so they can make informed choices at the polls, wrote Nick Clegg, Metas vice president of global affairs at the time.

The company also said it would add new guardrails to ensure there are no repeat offenders breaking the rules, even if they are political candidates or world leaders.

Facebook, the world’s largest social media site, has been both a public resource and a critical source of fundraising income for both of Trump’s previous campaigns.

YouTube announced in a tweet earlier Friday that as of today, Donald J. Trump’s channel is no longer restricted and can upload new content.

We carefully evaluated the continued risk of violence in the real world while balancing the chance for voters to hear equally from major national candidates ahead of an election, they wrote.

Twitter also reinstated Trump’s account last year after Elon Musk acquired the company. Twitter had said in 2021 that it had “permanently suspended” Trump’s account due to the risk of further incitement to violence. Since Musk rehired him, the former president has so far opted not to tweet.

Instead, he has been posting regularly on his own Truth Social site, which he launched after the suspensions.

A Trump campaign spokesman and a meta rep both declined to comment.
