The Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday voted to appoint former Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti as ambassador to India.
Garcetti’s nomination will now go to the full Senate, though it’s unclear when Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (DN.Y.) schedules a floor vote and whether Garcetti will have enough votes to be confirmed.
Most Republicans on the Foreign Relations panel
unanimous
opposed Garcetti’s nomination on Wednesday, unlike last year’s business meeting, when Garcetti and others sailed through without any objection
. Two Republicans voted for Garcetti.
Wednesday’s business meeting was postponed more than a week after Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) swept the nominations from Garcetti and others.
In a statement announcing his grab, Rubio had accused Garcetti of ignoring “credible allegations of sexual assault in his previous office” and called other nominations to the committee “absurd.”
Garcetti’s nomination has been dogged by allegations that he knew or should have known that his former senior adviser, Rick Jacobs, allegedly sexually harassed colleagues and made racial slurs.
Jacobs has denied the allegations, and Garcetti testified at his confirmation hearing in December 2021 that he never witnessed, nor was he brought to my attention, the alleged conduct.
Senator Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) released a 23-page report last year that found it extremely unlikely that Garcetti was unaware of his aides’ alleged behavior.
Vulnerable Senate Democrats whose seats are in the red states up for re-election in 2024 told The Times last week they had not researched the nomination and were unsure how they would vote.
But Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) said she was “impressed” with Garcetti’s knowledge of India after the two met privately last week. She remains undecided, but left the door open for a major swing vote to be cast in his favor.
Senator Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) also expressed her support for Garcetti.
Senate Democrats have a 51 to 49 majority against Republicans, and a majority of senators should support Garcetti’s nomination to send him to New Delhi as the US ambassador to India.
Earlier this week, Federal Communications Commission nominee Gigi Sohn withdrew her nomination after Senator Joe Manchin III (DW.Va.) announced he would vote against her.
Other nominees for the Wednesday panel included Richard Verma as Deputy Secretary of State for Administration and Resources; Stephanie Sanders Sullivan becomes US Representative to the African Union; Michael Alan Ratney becomes ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; Greeta Rao Gupta Becomes Ambassador for Global Women’s Issues; L. Felice Gorordo becomes US Deputy Executive Director of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development; Richard LA Weiner becomes US director of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development; and Leopoldo Martinez Nucete as Executive Director of the Inter-American Development Bank in the US.
