Five women who said they were denied abortion even when the pregnancy ended their lives are suing Texas over the abortion ban, the latest legal battle against state restrictions since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Roe

Calf.

The lawsuit filed Monday in state court said Texas’s law, one of the strictest in the country, creates confusion among doctors who refuse to treat some pregnant women with health complications because they fear repercussions.

Similar legal challenges to abortion restrictions have been raised in states across the country since the Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 decision establishing a constitutional right to abortion. As clinics have closed in Republican-dominated states with strict abortion bans, some patients have had to cross state lines.

According to the Texas lawsuit brought by the women and two doctors, one of the women had to wait until she was septic before getting an abortion and four others were forced to travel out of state to receive medical care after their health deteriorated. endangered by their pregnancies.

Can a Texas judge stop access to abortion pills, even in safe havens like California?

The group wants clarification of the law, which they say is vaguely written and has made medical professionals wary of liability if the state fails to consider the situation of a medical emergency.

In an email Tuesday, a spokesperson for Texas Atty. Gene. Ken Paxton said he is determined to do everything in his power to protect mothers, families and unborn children, and will continue to defend and enforce the laws duly enacted by the Texas Legislature.

Physicians in the state now face criminal charges if they perform an abortion in all but a limited number of cases where the patient’s life is in danger.

According to the lawsuit, one of the doctors, Damla Karsan, has seen doctors in Texas even afraid to speak out publicly on the matter for fear of retaliation. the provision of necessary obstetric care, including abortion care, has cooled.

As a direct result of the Texas abortion ban, Texas is in the midst of a health care crisis, the lawsuit said.
