The treasurers allegedly spent more than €100,000 in total without adequate financial accountability. The youth branch of the PvdA is considering taking legal action against the former directors.

The assets of the left-wing youth association evaporated in a short time: in the 2020 financial year there was a plus of over 200,000 euros and now it is less than 50,000 euros. In November, the parents’ association PvdA placed JS under guardianship. Since then, any expenditure the youth department wants to make has to be approved by the PvdA, confirms the party council, which has also appointed a committee to advise the new JS council. Furthermore, all debts, for a total value of 60,000 euros, were taken over by the PvdA.

According to the current board, the JS’s sharply deteriorated financial position is due to the reign of two treasurers who served from 2020 to 2022 and who are no longer members of the organization. The JS has asked them for clarification on the expenses exceeding €100,000 they have incurred and wants to seek reimbursement from them if they fail to account or provide inadequate reporting. The treasurer who was in office from September 2020 to June 2022 spent 67 thousand euros, which is not clear. His successor, who took office in July last year, is worth 35 thousand euros.
Self-enrichment
A corporate investigative agency called by the JS board concluded in November that these two former treasurers had made several suspicious payments. The office also suspects that former board members have used the association’s money to enrich themselves.
“The PvdA party council is shocked by the problems within the JS,” a spokesman said in a response. “We support the current (new) JS board in its approach to find out what happened and put things in order.”
