House of Representatives member Martin van Rooijen (50PLUS) received a majority for his proposal to return the scheme to the old amount from 1 July. The bonus would actually be lower because the AOW is already going up due to inflation. But the senators, with an average age of 61, put an end to it.
AOW increases with inflation
As a result, the state pension for the elderly will soon increase by 10%, which the cabinet has opposed. But the Senate, where the coalition lacks a majority, had previously opposed it. Due to high prices, the Cabinet decided earlier this year to allow the state pension to be increased.
In response to the increase in old-age provision, the government is reducing income support. Income support must disappear altogether from 2025. It is not yet known what the government will do now that the Senate wants to cancel the reduction after six months.
