Those nuclear weapons are being modernized. The Chamber adopted a motion by Jasper van Dijk (SP) asking it to “inform it on the state of affairs regarding nuclear disarmament and the modernization of nuclear weapons in the Netherlands”.
Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra had advised against the motion. Earlier he said the cabinet “cannot make any statement on the number and location of nuclear weapons in Europe on the basis of allied and legally binding agreements.”
The House has often pressed for openness on nuclear weapons, but that has yielded little. Two years ago, NATO appeared to indirectly confirm the presence of the weapons. The alliance later reported that NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg had been present at a “nuclear exercise” at Volkel air base.
