Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis continued to celebrate her “Everything Everywhere All at Once” win at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Monday. Times photographer Jay L. Clendenin Curtis was inspired by Faye Dunaway’s iconic “The Morning After the Oscars” photos poolside at the Beverly Hills Hotel after winning leading actress for her role in 1977’s “Network.” with a few twists “to make it a ‘Jamie’ picture”.
Clendenin describes how Curtis’ impromptu shoot came about:
It’s amazing how much Jamie is a fan of photography. We met in person years ago at the Toronto International Film Festival and seemed cosmically connected when her eyes lit up, realizing we were both “JLCs.” I took pictures of her reuniting with Eddie Murphy that day, and we’ve been talking ever since. As for the “morning-after” photo, I’ve been trying for years. This is a difficult conversation. You’re basically asking a publicist, “Hey, I don’t want to make fun of your team, But, if you to happen to win… can we take some pictures tomorrow?” And often… they don’t win. I know it’s part of the prize race, but it’s still a big question, especially if neither of you know who what will win.
I definitely hoped Jamie would, and I had a feeling she’d be a lot easier to convince on the “if” side since she’s known for not partying. She gets up early and often jokes about it, and she has. She climbed the steps to the Governors Ball, had her Oscar trophy engraved, and headed straight for the exit. On the way to the elevator, I whispered (begged!) her that we should do something early in the morning (Monday). She smiled as if she had really thought it through, but I wouldn’t hope so – she was riding the high flight of this wild night. The message the next morning was a wonderful invitation and I’m glad we were able to continue with it.
We had the picture of Faye Dunaway in our mind the whole time and knew we wanted to make it a “Jamie” picture, so I immediately imagined the louvers and foam on the nose… she was so wild. I wanted it with a touch of humor and humility, something I’ve come to know and love about newly crowned Oscar winner JLC.
