The cost of living in a private residence in Istanbul has tripled in the last year

“The cost of being a university student in Istanbul”, prepared by the Istanbul Planning Agency, has been published. The report presented data-driven research on college students, from the cost of living to scholarships and dormitories.

Within the framework of the report prepared, the public statistics of the central administration and the IPA research were jointly evaluated. Field interviews were also conducted with university students.

The report revealed that the average accommodation cost for a student staying in a private residence in Istanbul was 10,360 TL, an increase of 213.94 percent over the past year.

LUNCH RATES INCREASED BY 93.83 PERCENT

Highlights of the report are as follows:

* According to the report, the average price of lunches at public universities increased by 93.83 percent in the 2023 – 2024 academic year.

* A student’s monthly grocery purchases have increased by 113.29 percent over the past two years.

* The rapid rise in both state university cafeteria prices and grocery shopping prices in recent years has led to students skipping meals and entering classes hungry.

*IMM dormitories, which opened for female students for the first time in three different locations in 2021, reached a total capacity of 14 dormitories and 5,191 students in September 2023.

* Expenses for “construction and rental of higher education dormitories” amount to 63.55 percent of the amount spent for the Information and Communications Technology Institution, 23.37 percent of the amount spent for “religious services and non-formal religious education”, 1 percent of interest expense. , Corresponds to 73.

* According to research, the monthly living cost of a student staying in a private dormitory is 14,583 TL and the monthly living cost of a student staying at home is 12,535 TL.

THE COST OF LIVING FOR STUDENTS STAYING IN KYK INCREASED BY 89.53 PERCENT

* The cost of living for a student staying in a KYK dormitory increased by 89.53 percent annually. The largest increase was in spending on groceries and food at 217.09 percent.

* While the average accommodation cost of a student staying in a private residence in the 2022-2023 academic year was 3,300 TL, this cost turned out to be 10,360 TL, with an extraordinary increase of 213.94 percent in the last year .

* Dormitory capacity was not sufficient to cope with the increasing number of students each year, forcing them to rent houses. Rising rental prices have dealt a severe blow to educational efficiency and equality of opportunity by forcing students to choose between discontinuing their education and poor living conditions.
