Ranking first among the world’s most common cultural beverages, coffee is a market valued at $460 billion globally. According to data from the National Coffee Association (NCA), 125 million people produce coffee on an approximate area of 11 million hectares. And 166 million bags of coffee are produced, weighing approximately 60 kilograms.
BRAZIL LEADER
While 60 percent of quality coffee production is said to be in danger of extinction due to climate change, Arabica coffee production is forecast to decline by half by 2050. Production models are being studied alternatives to find a solution to this problem. With the influence of these studies, there has been no decrease in coffee production in the last 10 years, and an average increase of 1.5 percent has been achieved.
Brazil stands out as the first country in coffee production and a true power. The country, which is the world’s largest coffee producer, produces approximately 40 percent of the world’s coffee supply. Brazil is followed by Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia and Mexico, respectively.
African countries produce 12 percent of the world’s coffee production. On the continent, Ethiopia with 39 percent and Uganda with 23 percent are in the top two places with a total share of 62 percent in coffee bean production. Ivory Coast is in third place with a 13 percent share.
2 billion cups are drunk a day
On October 1, World Coffee Day is celebrated for the delicious drink that is common culture in the world. Coffee is the world’s largest traded commodity after oil. 400 billion cups of coffee are consumed annually in the world, an average of 2 billion cups per day. About 70,000 tons of coffee are consumed annually in Türkiye. The average adult consumes 3 cups of coffee a day. Experts point out that for health it is necessary for adults to consume 3 to 4 cups of coffee a day. In other words, it is stated that the intake of 400 milligrams of caffeine per day by an adult is also important for a healthy diet.
Coffee market in Turkey reached 3 billion TL
World Coffee consumption in Turkey, as in the rest of the world, is increasing day by day. In this context, while the coffee market reached 3 billion TL in Turkey, the recently increasing value of the sector was cold coffee. While Turkish coffee is among the best flavors in the world, the cold brew coffee industry has also gained significant momentum.
INCREASED 7 TIMES
According to research, the cold beer market has increased approximately six-fold in the last seven years. It was noted that the cold brew coffee industry is growing faster than the regular coffee industry and it was also stated that the sector has reached a value of 300 million TL. In Turkey, where 70,000 tons of coffee beans are imported, market trends change depending on the consumption of cold coffee and interest in different types of coffee increases day by day. Although the cold brew category is considered “new” in Turkey, it draws attention as one of the rapidly growing areas. While cold brew coffee is in high demand, especially among new generations, interest in cold brew coffee is increasing around the world, as evidenced by rising per capita consumption.
New flavors are on the way
In Turkey, the cold coffee market constitutes 3 percent of the cold beverage category. In addition, the cold coffee category stands out as the category that has grown the most in the last five years compared to other cold drinks. New products are expected to be added to the market in parallel with consumer demands.
