IMF demands Pakistan raise taxes on the rich

International Monetary Fund (IMF) President Kristalina Georgieva demanded that Pakistan tax the rich more to protect the poor.

As reported by Geo News television, the Prime Minister of the Pakistani interim government, Anvarul Hak Kakar, who was in New York within the framework of the 78th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), met with the president of the IMF, Georgieva .

During the meeting, Prime Minister Kakar underlined his satisfaction over the IMF’s approval of the $3 billion stand-by arrangement to support the Pakistani economy.

Kakar briefed IMF President Georgieva on measures taken to revitalize and stabilize the country’s economy.

Noting that these initiatives aim to create a stable and enabling environment necessary for sustainable economic growth and investment, Kakar stated that they have a strong focus on protecting vulnerable segments of the society.

In her statement to a private television channel after the meeting, Georgieva demanded that Pakistan collect more taxes from the rich to protect the poor.

The IMF Board of Governors on July 12 approved a $3 billion stand-by arrangement with Pakistan, lasting nine months, to support Pakistan’s economic stabilization program. (AA)
