Tea prices, which increased four times in three months, were this time affected by the drought.

The third bud harvest period continues in the production of fresh tea produced by 1 million producing families on an area of 830 thousand decares in the provinces of Rize, Trabzon, Artvin and Giresun in the eastern Black Sea region.

In tea agriculture, which is affected by drought due to global climate change, high temperatures and decreased rainfall cause yield losses.

It is observed that the decline in tea yield has continued in the last 5 years due to drought, improper harvesting and incomplete fertilization.

While more than 860 thousand tons of fresh tea were purchased in Rize, Artvin, Trabzon and Giresun in 2021, last year it decreased to approximately 583 thousand tons, while in the new period in which harvesting and purchases continued, the producers delivered approximately 520 thousand tons of fresh tea. tea.

EXPECTATION OF A DEEPER DECLINE OVER THE YEAR YEAR

Rize Commodity Exchange Chairman Mehmet Erdoğan stated that the decline in yield will continue and suggested creating tea gardens suitable for warmer climatic conditions.

Erdoğan said: “Today we are trying to identify the deficiencies. When we look back 5 years; There is a decline of 18 to 20 percent in terms of yield in tea agriculture. We also experienced this decline last year. “We may experience this decline a little more this year,” he said.

“When we analyze the reasons, the increase in raw material prices comes to the fore,” said Erdogan, drawing special attention to the increase in fertilizer prices and adding: “Citizens’ access to fertilizers also It’s become difficult.”

INCORRECT COLLECTION AND A FACTOR OF CLIMATE CHANGE

Erdoğan stated that poor harvests and global warming in tea agriculture caused yield losses: “During this period, many workers from abroad came to work in the field. These workers damaged the fields because they did not know how to pick tea. There are no green leaves left in the field that should be left on the second and third shoots. “These are mistakes made due to collection,” he said.

“In addition, we are starting to see the effects of climate conditions and global warming in the region,” Erdoğan said and continued:

“We experience the instability of rains and temperatures in the region. I have rarely seen temperatures of 37 degrees in Rize in the past, but this summer we saw temperatures of 37 degrees for about 20 days in a row. Our tea plant is not prepared for this. “Long periods without rain and high temperatures caused the plant to shelter rather than produce crops.”

IT WAS INCREASED FOR THE FOURTH TIME IN THREE MONTHS

On the other hand, tea prices have increased fourfold in the last three months.

Çaykur increased the price of tea by 43 to 45 percent on June 8, 9.8 percent on July 14, and 5 percent on August 15, and finally increased it by 15 percent on August 12. September.

Sector sources, consulted by Sozcu.com.tr, said they expected a 10 percent increase starting this month and that the increase in question exceeded their expectations.

Thus, Çaykur, who did not increase the price of tea during the 10 months before the elections, increased the price by more than 90 percent in the three months after the elections. (DHA, SOZCU)
