Anchovy alarm in the Black Sea

“Anchovy hunting should stop completely”

The fishing season, which began on September 1, continues in the seas. Fishermen, who began the season in the Black Sea with an abundance of bonito, could not find what they were looking for in anchovies because the sea water did not cool down.

Experts point out that the anchovy population, which has come to the fore with the debate over the legal size of hunting, is at risk for sustainable hunting and call for hunting to be stopped completely.

In recent years, restrictions on banning anchovy hunting have been periodically imposed. However, some experts say this ban is not enough and advocate for a one-year hunting ban.

‘IT IS OVERHUNTING THAT THREATENS THE BLACK SEA’

Director of the KTÜ Institute of Marine Science and Technology, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cemal Dinçer stated that every year there are serious declines in hunting data and said: “When we look at the hunting data of previous years, we know that there have been serious declines in turkey hunting over the years in general.

Dinçer said: “In recent years, the average catch has been around 300 thousand tons, of which almost 90 percent is anchovy. There has also been a significant decline in the case of anchovy. This is mainly due to overfishing. We can easily say this because the fish caught are quite small in size. “What threatens the Black Sea is overfishing,” he said.

‘Anchovy hunting MUST BE COMPLETELY STOPPED

Stating that precautions must be taken with anchovy for sustainable fishing, Prof. Dr. Dinçer said:

“Our boats are quite large and their equipment is very modern and they have extremely powerful long-range fish finders. They can catch most of these fish in a short time. That is to say, the parameter we call hunting effort is quite high.

We can say that this is only sustainable if it is reduced in the Black Sea and legal hunting is practiced in accordance with hunting conditions. I suggest that anchovy fishing be put to a complete end.

Now this year anchovies are coming out again, but it is a scattered flock. We can say that it is the fish that has not left the waters of our country, that is, the fish from last year. “It’s too early to hunt anchovies.” (DHA)
