TÜKODER requested the withdrawal of increases in public transport in Istanbul
Aziz Koçal, president of the Consumer Protection Association (TÜKODER), demanded a reassessment of the decision to increase public transport taken at the meeting of the Transport Coordination Center (UKOME) of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM).
Koçal, in his written statement, stated that the weight of the increase in vehicle maintenance, repairs and spare parts, fuel, SCT and VAT, taxes and vehicle inspections is on the shoulders of consumers in the transport sector.
Noting that trader organizations and chambers that provide transport services are pushing UKOME’s door to ask for an increase as it arrives, Koçal said: “It should not be forgotten that transport is a basic service and affects the daily life of people. . The increase decision taken by UKOME will negatively affect the lives of our consumers, increase transportation costs and seriously affect daily life. It will create a great burden, especially for low-income groups and families who use transportation frequently.
REEVALUATION REQUEST
Koçal asserted that UKOME did not sufficiently consider the socio-economic status and difficulties of consumers when making this decision, saying:
“The greater participation of consumers in such decision processes and the consideration of their points of view and demands will contribute to finding a fair and balanced solution.
As the Consumer Protection Association, we invite UKOME and other authorities to listen to the demands and concerns of consumers and to re-evaluate this increase decision.
At the same time, we demand that steps be taken to improve the quality of transport services, work on alternative and sustainable transport solutions and facilitate consumer access to transport.
