US jobless claims are below expectations

Claims for unemployment benefits in the US reached 237,000 last week, below expectations.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast jobless claims to top 250,000.

According to seasonally adjusted data announced by the US Department of Labor, the number of claims previously announced as 248,000 for the week of July 1 was revised to 249,000.

INCREASE TO LEVEL 1,729 MILLION

The four-week average of US jobless claims, considered a better indicator of US labor market trends, fell to 246,750 in the week ending July 8.

The total number of people receiving unemployment benefits in the US rose to 1.729 million in the week ending July 1. (Reuters)
