Call from the president of TZOB to TMO to increase market prices

Call from the president of TZOB to TMO to increase market prices

In his written statement, Şemsi Bayraktar, Chairman of the Turkish Union of Chambers of Agriculture (TZOB), said that this year, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute, wheat production will increase by 3.8 percent to 20, 5 tons, and barley production will increase. by 1.2 percent to 8.6 million tons.

Noting that the increase in yield is positive, Bayraktar said that due to low prices on the free market, the unwillingness of industrialists and traders to buy products from farmers in some regions has made farmers feel disadvantaged. .

ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN

Bayraktar pointed out that in the period 2022-2023, especially in the months of October to January, due to the lack of rainfall throughout the country, warehouses in many regions were filled due to wheat imports, noting that this situation generated low prices on the free market. .

Pointing out that TMO needs to make urgent purchases by eliminating the problems experienced in the appointment system in the regions where the harvest is about to end and the harvest has just started, Bayraktar stated that measures should be taken in the regions where the harvest has not started.

Recalling that TMO announced the purchase price of 9 thousand lira per ton of durum wheat, 8 thousand 250 lira per ton of bread wheat and 7 thousand lira per ton of barley, Bayraktar said:

“TMO determined the sale price at 10,200 liras per ton for durum wheat, 9,350 liras for bread wheat and 7,725 liras for barley. Despite these announced prices, the prices on the free market are 8,079 liras per ton for durum wheat, 6,982 liras per ton for bread wheat and 5,697 liras per ton for barley.

. In this sense, our union and our agricultural chambers receive intense complaints from our farmers. Prices on the free market are regionally below cost in some places, while in some regions just cover cost. This situation is not sustainable and makes the farmer move away from production.

TMO should immediately strengthen its effective purchasing policy and dominate the market. TMO should increase market prices through quick purchases and early payments. This situation must be remedied urgently, in favor of our producers. We have no choice but this.”

THE MANUFACTURER WANTS TO SELL THE PRODUCT TO TMO

Stating that farmers want to sell their produce to TMO rather than traders or other market players offering low prices, Bayraktar said: “The Grain Board must urgently increase buying centers, buy in bulk if necessary and not to leave our farmers at the mercy of the merchants. In addition, if payment is made to the account of our farmers, who have the opportunity to sell TMO products, within 15 days, not 1 month later, opportunists who want to buy the product from the farmer at no cost will be prevented. The Agricultural Credit Cooperatives and TÜRKŞEKER should also participate in the purchase of grain, as in previous years.” (AA)
