The shelter crisis has gone far beyond hiding
Inflation, exchange rates and the economic crisis have also affected the basic right of citizens, which is housing. According to the Bahçeşehir University Center for Economic and Social Research (BETAM) report, house prices increased by 89.1 percent, which TURKSTAT claims to have increased by 20.7 percent.
CHP İzmir MP Gökçe Gökçen said: “The housing crisis in Turkey has long passed the point where it can be hidden by TÜİK’s manipulation of real figures.” The study entitled “Prospects of the housing market for sale by owner” prepared by BETAM revealed that the increase in house prices announced by TURKSTAT by 20.7 percent for May does not reflect reality.
THE DATA IS SUSPICIOUS
According to the BETAM study, the price per square meter of residences in Turkey, which was 10,891 TL in May 2022, jumped to 20,596 TL in May 2023. The price per square meter increased by 89.1 percent in a year. In the period from May 2022 to May 2023, the top three cities with the largest increase in house prices were Van, Malatya and Ordu.
Stating that there is a five-fold difference between the TUIK data and the scientific reports, Gökçen said: “The BETAM report revealed the facts that we all know. TurkStat, on the other hand, mocks millions of people living in housing problems and insults the science of statistics. TÜİK has gotten out of control,” he said.
van first
In the last year, there has been a rapid increase in the prices per square meter of housing for sale. In this period, Van ranked first among all cities with an increase of 122.8 percent. Malatya followed Van with an increase of 121.7 percent, while Ordu ranked third in house square meter price increase with an increase of 117.1 percent.
