More expensive fuel

Petrol pump prices will rise considerably next week. From 1 July, the excise duty rebate, introduced by the Cabinet on 1 April 2022, will be phased out to ensure citizens do not suffer from explosively rising energy costs. After an initial reduction, the discount on excise duty will still amount to 8.65 cents per liter for petrol, 5.55 cents per liter for diesel and 2 cents per liter for LPG. That’s half the discount people still get.

In view of the increase in excise duties, a rush on petrol is expected at smaller petrol stations. While they are doing everything they can to avoid sending customers home without petrol, it is expected that some locations will run out of petrol temporarily due to huge demand. ‘It is entirely possible that petrol stations are running out of steam here and there,’ thinks Erik de Vries, director of NOVE, the industry organization of independent and private fuel traders.

Minimum salary

The minimum wage will increase by 36 euros per month. This means that employees aged 21 and older will benefit from a net gain of approximately two percent. The minimum wage was raised by 10% earlier this year. Minimum wages for young people are also increasing.

The fact that the minimum wage is automatically increasing means that various benefits such as the AOW and WW will also increase, because they are tied to the minimum wage. From July 1, people living alone will receive AOW 1,458.15 per month, while those living together will receive AOW 993.16 per person.

Family allowances

Child benefits will be 3% lower due to lower energy prices. The amount moves with the consumer price index. Last year, when energy prices soared due to the war in Ukraine, resulting in record inflation, child benefits increased by more than 16%.

For children up to 6 years the quarterly amount decreases by EUR 8.06 to EUR 261.70, for children aged 6 to 11 the amount decreases by EUR 9.97 to a total of 317.77 EUR and for children aged 12 to 18 with From 11.52 euros to 373.85 euros. At the beginning of next year, family allowances will once again be adjusted to the average price level.

Legal interest

From 1 July, the statutory interest also increases. The interest that creditors can charge if someone is in debt or in arrears will rise from 4 to 6 percent. From now on, fines to the Tax and Customs Administration will also be paid more expensively. The maximum interest that lenders can charge will also rise from 12 to 14 percent, because it’s tied to statutory interest.

Social income

The rents of social housing and student rooms can be increased again from 1 July by up to 3.1 percent. This only applies to rents over 300 euros, for lower rents the maximum increase is 25 euros per month.

Housing associations have already pledged that the rents of more than half a million residents of low-income housing association homes will decrease starting July 1.

Other

Starting July 1, all kinds of things will also change that will most likely have a minor effect on your wallet. For example, starting July 1, business owners are no longer allowed to offer free plastic takeaway cups or trays to customers, but must charge a separate fee for this. They are also obligated to offer a reusable alternative. According to the Dutch Consumers and Markets Authority (ACM), this rule misses the mark.

To protect vulnerable groups, online gambling advertising will also be banned from next week. This applies to radio and television commercials and street billboards.
