Only 1 in 10 officially unemployed can receive unemployment benefits
The Research Center of the Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions (DİSK-AR) has released the Unemployment and Employment Outlook report covering the period June 2023 and published by TUIK.
According to TUIK data, the number of unemployed aged 15 and over increased by 74,000 in April 2023 compared to the previous month and reached 3,585,000 people. While the unemployment rate was 8.1 percent for men, it was estimated to be 14.3 percent for women.
BROAD UNEMPLOYMENT INCREASES TO 23.8 PERCENT
According to the calculation made by DİSK-AR using TUIK data, the seasonally adjusted broadly defined number of unemployed was 9 million 138 thousand people in April 2023.
In the DİSK-AR report, “According to the calculation made with TURKSTAT data, the seasonally adjusted broad number of unemployed was 9 million 138 thousand people in April 2023. According to TURKSTAT, the strictly defined unemployment rate, which was from 13.8% in April 2019, it was 10.2% in April 2023. However, the broad definition of unemployment increased from 19 percent to 23.8 percent in the same years.
BENEFIT OF 10 PERCENT OF UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFIT
In the report, it was noted that the vast majority of the unemployed were unable to benefit from unemployment benefits due to the harsh conditions for receiving unemployment benefits and the use of unemployment insurance resources for purposes other than their intended purpose.
The data based on the information obtained from the TUIK data was explained as follows:
“In April 2023, TURKSTAT announced that the total number of narrowly unemployed is 3 million 585 thousand people. According to İŞKUR data for April 2023, the number of people who can receive unemployment benefits this month remained at 392 thousand.
Thus, only 10 percent of the officially unemployed received unemployment benefits in April 2023. More than 3 million unemployed were deprived of unemployment benefits. This means that about 90 percent of the unemployed do not receive unemployment benefits.
WOMEN UNEMPLOYMENT 31 PERCENT
Unemployment for women remains the highest category of all types of unemployment, according to the report.
According to HLFS data for April 2023, the category with the highest unemployment rate was the broad definition of female unemployment at 31.3%. The second highest category of unemployment was broadly defined unemployment at 28.3 percent.
In the report, which noted that the gap between narrow and broad unemployment rates in April 2023 was 13.6 points, the most important reason for the widening gap between narrow and broad unemployment is the number of related underemployments. over time, those who lost hope. , those who did not look for work and are ready to work, and those who are looking for work and start working, was explained as the increase in the number of those who cannot do so.
