Honduras Submits Official Application to Join BRICS Bank

Honduran President Xiomara Castro’s office said in a statement that Castro conveyed his membership application during his meeting with Dilma Rousseff, the former Brazilian president, who heads the bank, during her visit to the NDB headquarters in Shanghai, China, yesterday.

In the statement, it was noted that the Honduran government will establish a technical commission to carry out the accession procedures. Castro, the leader of Houndras, who officially recognizes China, which has a sovereignty conflict with Taiwan, with whom he recently cut diplomatic relations, is in this country on an official visit.

ROUSSEFF MEETS CASTRO

Castro, who arrived in Shanghai on June 9 as part of a 6-day visit, visited the NDB headquarters yesterday and met with Rousseff.

The New Development Bank was established with a registered capital of 100 billion dollars, with the agreement signed at the VI BRICS Summit in 2014 by the countries of the BRICS group made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Apart from its 5 founding members, Egypt, Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates are members of the bank, while membership negotiations are still ongoing with Uruguay. (AA)
