EU imposes Huawei ban on member states
The European Union (EU) is considering a mandatory ban on member states using companies that may pose a security risk on their 5G networks, including China’s Huawei Technologies.
According to the Financial Times report and based on the authorities, Brussels took the measure in question with growing concern after some national governments delayed taking action on the matter.
ONLY A THIRD HAS PROHIBITED
According to the report, Thierry Breton, the EU official in charge of the internal market, told telecom ministers at a meeting on Friday last week that only a third of member states had banned Huawei in critical areas.
The EU said in 2020 that member states could place restrictions on high-risk 5G provider companies like Huawei or remove them from core parts of their telecoms networks, and resisted pressure from Washington to ban Chinese telcos altogether. (Reuters)
