Hail loss of 500 million TL in cherry

Hail loss of 500 million TL in cherry

Rainfall, which is above seasonal norms in Denizli, and hail, which is effective from time to time, bother growers.

Growers preparing to harvest registered Napoleon cherry in Honaz district suffered a hail disaster last week.

After the hail, which took place in the district center, the District Department of Agriculture and the Chamber of Agriculture of Honaz carried out a damage assessment.

It was determined that 8 thousand hectares of cherry trees in the region were affected by the hail. In this region, some 7,000 tons of cherries were broken before they could be harvested.

The total damage was claimed to be close to 500 million lira.

‘CHERRY GROWERS ARE IN A VERY DIFFICULT SITUATION’

The president of the Honaz Chamber of Agriculture, Hasan Vest, stated that the producer was defenseless in the face of the natural disaster.

Vest; “The hail has left nothing behind. Unfortunately, there is nothing our growers can do at this stage. There were also problems in the areas where the rain was concentrated. Cherry growers are in a very difficult situation.”

PRODUCT LOSS OF 30 PERCENT

In the Çal region, where the hail occurred and where wine grape producers are concentrated, the rains affected some 1,500 decares of vineyards.

In the damage assessment carried out by the District Department of Agriculture, it was revealed that the loss of crops in this region was 30 percent.

Around 100 producers were affected by the rain. Çallı producers stated that the hail is effective in a very small part; “Those who have insurance will be compensated for their losses. For those that aren’t, something needs to be done at the end of the season depending on the damage situation. “You have to support the producers,” he said.

‘There is a risk of disease’

Farmers growing grains in the barren fields of the city center were unable to raise their crops due to rains despite the harvest season.

Denizli Central Chamber of Agriculture Chairman Hamdi Gemici said: “Harvesting cannot be done in arid areas. It will be a problem if it is delayed a little longer. Rainfall will now start to damage the crop. The quality has started to decline. The orchards in the center are also affected by rainfall, the quality of the fruit decreases. At the same time, there is a risk of fungal diseases,” he said.
