Onion, symbol of charity

Onion and potato prices, which have become symbols of life problems and famine, began to appear in polling places days before the elections. The debates on the “onion rate, dollar rate” marked the elections that passed to the Presidential System of Government in 2018. During the 5 years of the presidential system, onions and dollars were the most discussed issues on the eve of the elections. Citizens “It has become a symbol of charity. The rapidly rising dollar has also become an important indicator of impoverishment with high inflation.

NOT ON THE AGENDA

There are two weeks left for the 2023 general elections. In the 2018 general elections, while the dollar and dried onion left their mark on the agenda, the only thing that changed in 5 years with the government’s economic policies was the worsening of the food crisis . Just before the 2018 elections, the opposition parties were making electoral propaganda saying: “The dollar is not dry, the onion is dry”, while the dollar was at 4.75 TL and the onion was at 6.95 TL. Before the presidential and parliamentary elections to be held on May 14 of this year, onions with a weight of up to 30 liras and the dollar, which can bear up to 21 liras on the market, are on the agenda.

While nothing on the agenda has changed in 5 years, a Turkey more dependent on foreign food has been created due to the economic policies of the AKP government, which has resorted to imports instead of production, and a period in which that records were broken in food inflation with rising farm costs. The onion price increased 331.65% in 5 years and the dollar increased 309.47%. And yet the government is making electoral propaganda saying ‘We call Togg, they say onion’.
