Longtime Marvel Studios CEO Victoria Alonso has announced that the superhero film will be owned by Walt Disney Co.
A Disney spokesperson confirmed that Alonso is no longer with Marvel, but gave no reason for her departure.
Alonso has been with Marvel since 2006 and joined the company as executive vice president of visual effects and post-production.
She co-produced the first Iron Man, followed by Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger. More recently, she served as an executive producer on projects such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and the Disney+ series Loki.
Marvel found success in the superhero genre because of its consistency, but its track record began to show cracks. The latest “Ant-Man and the Wasp” film was hammered by critics, and the film suffered a sharp drop at the US box office after a strong debut.
Alonso was one of the main deputies for Marvel boss Kevin Feige, alongside Nate Moore and Louis D’Esposito. Marvel is a key anchor of Disney’s strategies in both theatrical release and streaming as the company looks to continue adding subscribers as it becomes more profitable.
Born in Buenos Aires, Alonso moved to Los Angeles in the 1980s to break into the visual effects industry. She worked with James Cameron and Tim Burton before joining Marvel.
Alonso also produced Argentina, 1985, which was nominated for an Academy Award for International Film this year.
