Meat and Dairy Institution to provide discounted carcass meat to Ankara markets

Mustafa Kayhan, General Manager of the Meat and Dairy Institution (ESK), stated that they will supply all the carcass meat they need from this week to markets operating under the Ankara Association of Food and Necessary Retailers (Ankara PERDER), and said: “Our measures will continue until the price is balanced.”

A protocol on sale of cheap meat was signed between the Institution and Ankara PERDER at the ESK Meeting Hall.

“PRICE INCREASE OF MORE THAN 140 PERCENT”

In his speech, Kayhan asserted that the IHC has a duty to regulate the red meat market, saying, “Since December 2022, red meat prices have entered a rapid upward trend. Our institution first examined the reason for the price increases. It turned out that the price increase was largely due to the imbalance between supply and demand. Although production costs increased by 84 percent, we determined that the price increase exceeded 140 percent.

Noting that they are working to ensure a balance between supply and demand for red meat, Kayhan indicated that they first signed a contract for the purchase of 85,000 animals and that live animals began to enter the country.

Noting that the other measure is the substitution of carcass meat, Kayhan pointed out that 4,500 tons of carcasses are allowed to enter the country.

Stating that the effectiveness of the intervention is closely related to the expansion of the retail group’s offer, Kayhan recalled that they signed a contract with Istanbul PERDER for the sale of ground meat and cubed meat at a discount.

Kayhan said that at outlets within the scope of LOSE in Istanbul, 190 kilograms of ground meat and 210 kilograms of cubed meat are sold at a price of 190 lira.

“THE MEASURES WILL BE CONTINUED UNTIL BALANCE IS ESTABLISHED”

Referring to the carcass meat supply protocol signed with Ankara PERDER, Kayhan said:

“Starting this week, we will supply the markets operating in Ankara PERDER with all the carcass meat they need. The meat is shipped from Anatolia to the big cities. When we weaken Anatolian buying, on-site price control will be more comfortable.

Our measures will continue until there is a balance in the price. We will try to provide this service in the provinces that want to be included in the campaign. We do not cause loss of income for our producer in our intervention. We will use all instruments very clearly until we reach equilibrium.”

On the other hand, Kayhan added that they will carry out studies to increase the participation of small and medium-sized companies in the total production of red meat.

“SIGNIFICANT TO BALANCE MEAT PRICES”

Ankara PERDER President Ramazan Gülhan also stated that they operate with more than 500 stores in Ankara and made the following assessment:

“Meat prices have risen in recent months. We are in constant contact with Istanbul and we see that your intervention in Istanbul is very appropriate. It is a great contribution to our low-income people and very significant in terms of balancing meat prices. We believe that when we start selling meat in Ankara, carcass prices will drop back below 200 lira. We will have the opportunity to sell minced meat for 190 lira and cubed meat for 210 lira to the people of Ankara.” (AA)
