G-7 did not set date for decommissioning of coal plants
G-7 ministers failed to agree on a deadline for phasing out coal-fired power plants.
The G7 energy and climate ministers met in Sapporo, Hokkaido, in the northernmost part of the country, under Japan’s rotating presidency. According to the joint statement issued at the two-day meeting, the G7 ministers were unable to set a deadline for the phase-out of coal-fired power plants.
According to the statement, the commitment of the G-7 countries to create “a fully or predominantly decarbonized electricity sector by 2035” was reaffirmed.
Commit to accelerating the phase-out of fossil fuels that cannot be reduced, with a view to achieving the goal of net-zero energy systems by 2050 at the latest.
VEHICLE EMISSIONS REDUCTION TARGET
They agreed to collectively reduce carbon dioxide emissions from vehicle stocks by at least 50 percent by 2035 or earlier, compared to the rate in 2000.
Although the need to reduce natural gas consumption was emphasized, it was also stated that the investments to be made in this sector could help to eliminate potential energy deficits.
Electricity produced by renewables is promised to increase significantly and offshore wind capacity to rise to 150 gigawatts by 2030. (BRITISH AUTOMOBILE CLUB)
