Turkey’s e-commerce volume exceeded 800 billion lira in 2022

Turkey’s e-commerce volume last year increased by 109 percent compared to the previous year and reached 800.7 billion lira.

According to the compilation by the Ministry of Commerce from the data of “Electronic Business Information System (ETBIS)” for the year 2022, there are 548 thousand 688 companies engaged in e-commerce activities in Turkey.

While 31,320 of these companies are registered in ETBIS, 533,19 companies operate in electronic commerce markets.

In addition, the number of sites registered with the ETBIS reached 37,256. In addition to e-commerce activities on their own site, 15,651 companies also sell on e-commerce marketplaces.

As of 2022, the domestic e-commerce volume reached 800.7 billion lira with an increase of 109 percent compared to the previous year.

43 PERCENT INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF ORDER

In the same period, the number of orders increased by 43 percent from 3.347 million to 4.787 million. Retail e-commerce volume in this period amounted to TL 458 billion.

While the ratio of e-commerce to general commerce was 17.7% in 2021, this rate increased to 18.6% last year.

In 2022, 61 percent of the total e-commerce volume based on payment methods consisted of card transactions with 486.7 billion lira. It was followed by money orders/EFT and other payments at 36% and 287 billion lira, and cash on delivery at 3% and 27 billion lira.

While 80 percent of companies preferred to sell in a single market, 12.6 percent preferred 2 markets, 4 percent preferred 3, 1.9 percent 4, 1.5 percent 5, and more. .

The province with the largest number of companies conducting e-commerce activities was Istanbul with 37.7 percent. This province is followed by Ankara with 8.5 percent, Izmir with 7.1 percent, Bursa with 4.6 percent, Antalya with 3.4 percent, Konya with 2.4 percent, and Kocaeli with 2.4 percent.

OTHER COUNTRIES MADE 33.8 BILLION TL OF PURCHASES FROM Türkiye

In the said period, the share of domestic e-commerce spending was 91.3%, which is equivalent to Lira 731 billion, while the rate of spending by other countries from Turkey’s e-commerce sites was calculated by 4.2% and 33.8 billion lire. The rate of purchases made by citizens abroad was 4.5 percent, and the amount was recorded at 35.9 billion lira.

In terms of the distribution of e-commerce volume by sector, white goods and small appliances ranked first with approximately 96.7 billion lira.

This volume was 54 billion lira in clothing, shoes and accessories, 45.9 billion lira in electronics and 45.1 billion lira in airlines. These sectors were followed by food and supermarkets with 26.5 billion lira, transport and travel storage with 24 billion lira, food with 19.6 billion lira and accommodation with 11.5 billion lira.

Considering the change in the volume of e-commerce by sectors in 2022 compared to the previous year, there was an increase of 222 percent in the accommodation sector.

It was followed by airlines with an increase of 156 percent, the travel, transportation and storage sectors with an increase of 132 percent, clothing, shoes and accessories with an increase of 129 percent, electronics with an increase of 122 percent, food and supermarkets with an increase of 129 percent. increase of 95 percent, white line and small electrical appliances with an increase of 88 percent, and 39 percent the alimentary industries increased.

AVERAGE AMOUNT OF THE BASKET 167 TL

Women made up 58 percent and men 42 percent of buyers through e-commerce intermediary service providers.

People living in Istanbul made 36%, Ankara 9% and Izmir 6% of purchases made through e-commerce. These provinces were followed by Bursa and Antalya with 4 percent and Kocaeli with 2.5 percent.

Although the average amount of the basket in e-commerce was 167 TL, this amount differed depending on the payment methods. The aforementioned amount was calculated as 273 lira for card payments, 199 lira for door-to-door payments, and 99 lira for money order/EFT.

The average amount of the sectoral basket is 9,425 liras in the accommodation sector, 3,804 liras in home, garden, furniture and decoration, 2,928 liras in airlines, 451 liras in white goods and small appliances, 447 liras in clothing, shoes and accessories sector in 2022. and in electronics it amounted to 292 liras.

85% OF PAYMENTS MADE IN CASH

85% of e-commerce expenses were made through cash payments and 15% through the installment payment option.

Regarding the sectors, quotas were preferred at a rate of 77 percent in home and decoration, 34 percent in white goods, 29 percent in electronics, 31 percent in clothing, 10 percent in travel, 15 percent in lodging, 15 percent on airlines, and 6.5 percent on books and magazines. (AA)
