Description of the onion from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry
In a statement made today, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry provided information on onion production, which has been criticized for its price in recent days. According to the averages of the last 10 years, 2 million 100 thousand tons of dried onions are produced in Turkey annually, and this figure reached 2 million 350 thousand tons last year.
* “According to the data of the Turkish Statistical Institute; In the 2021-2022 business year, the domestic use amount is 2 million 87 thousand tons and our qualification rate is 114.7 percent. Taking these data into account, it can be seen that dry onion production is carried out at a level to cover our needs.
* With the land we own, the changing climatic characteristics in our different geographic regions allow us to harvest in another region while planting in one region of our country. Thus, the food needs of our people are met without interruption.
“THE TURFANDA ONION HARVEST BEGAN”
* Although the consumption of dry onion harvested and stored in 2022 continues throughout the year, in the southern regions of our country the first harvests for the new production season have begun.
* In this context, the early onion harvest has started in the provinces of Adana and Hatay since April. In this period in which we are, there is a higher return than last year. First season onion production, which was 272,000 tonnes in Adana and Hatay provinces in 2022, is expected to rise to 284,000 tonnes this year. The amount of onions produced with the new harvests and that began to reach our tables is at a level that will more than satisfy the needs of our people.” PHOENIX
