The Statistical Institute of Turkey announced the labor force statistics for February 2023.
According to the results of the Household Workforce Survey; The number of unemployed aged 15 and over increased by 65,000 in February 2023 compared to the previous month and reached 3,514,000 people. The unemployment rate, on the other hand, increased by 0.2 percentage points to 10.0 percent. While the unemployment rate was 8.7 percent for men, it was estimated to be 12.6 percent for women.
THE NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES DECREASED
The number of employed decreased by 361,000 people in February 2023 compared to the previous month and went to 31,460,000 people, while the occupancy rate decreased 0.6 points to 48.2 percent. While this rate was 65.0 percent for men, it was 31.8 percent for women.
The labor force decreased by 295 thousand people in February 2023 compared to the previous month and was registered at 34 million 975 thousand people, while the labor participation rate decreased by 0.5 percentage points to 53.6 percent. While the labor force participation rate was 71.2 percent for men, it was 36.4 percent for women.
YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT 19.2 PERCENT
The unemployment rate among the youth population covering the age group of 15 to 24 years became 19.2 percent with a decrease of 0.7 percentage points compared to the previous month. Unemployment rate in this age group; It was estimated to be 15.4 percent in men and 26.2 percent in women.
The effective average weekly working day, corrected for seasonal and calendar effects, of those employed during the reference period decreased 0.1 hour compared to the previous month and went to 44.7 hours in February 2023.
BROAD UNEMPLOYMENT RATE 23.4 PERCENT
The idle labor force rate, made up of underemployment due to insufficient hours, potential labor force, and the unemployed stood at 23.4 percent in February 2023, an increase of 1.5 percentage points compared to the previous month.
While the combined rate of underemployment due to insufficient hours and unemployment was 16.0 percent, the combined rate of unemployment and potential labor force was estimated at 17.9 percent.
