Poland won’t stop burning coal until it switches to nuclear power
The Polish Minister of Climate and Environment, Anna Moskwa, made assessments of the Polish energy sector at a press conference.
Expressing that they still rely heavily on coal for electricity generation, Moskwa stressed that Poland cannot end coal-based power generation until it replaces it with nuclear power.
IT WILL CONSTITUTE 73 PERCENT OF THE ENERGY BASKET
“We are preparing our system for this,” Moskwa said. We have completed the technological and economic review of our existing coal-fired power plants. We are also looking at the issue of modernization.” he used his statements.
Stating that his goal is for renewable and nuclear energy to account for 73 percent of Poland’s energy basket by 2040, Moskwa said: “For an effective energy transition, power transmission and distribution networks must be developed. We want to open the first nuclear power plant in Poland in 2033.” he said.
FROM 2026
The Polish government had decided in November 2022 that Westinghouse would provide the technology for the first power station under the “Nuclear Power Program”.
Construction of the first nuclear power plant is scheduled to start in 2026. As part of the Polish government’s energy strategy, 6 nuclear power units with a total capacity of 6 to 9 gigawatts will be built in the country. (AA)
