Floods and hail hit agriculture after the earthquake: the cost doubled
Şemsi Bayraktar, Chairman of the Turkish Union of Agricultural Chambers (TZOB), assessed the flood disaster in the earthquake region, price differences between producer and market in March, and changes in input prices .
Stating that the price difference between the producer and the market in March was seen in lemons with 366.8 percent, Bayraktar said: “The price increase in lemons is apple with 260 percent, lettuce with 233.2 percent, percent, red lentils with 209.9 percent, dried lentils with grapes with 195.6 percent, parsley with 183.2 percent and spinach with 181.7 percent.
Bayraktar said: “Lemon 4.7 times, apples 3.6 times, lettuce 3.3 times, red lentils 3.1 times, raisins 3 times, parsley and spinach 2.8 times more were sold on the market.”
THE REDEST MEAT IS HIGH IN MARCH
According to Bayraktar, 27 of 39 products on the market increased in March, while the prices of only 12 products decreased.
The product with the highest price increase in the market in March was beef and lamb with 23.6 percent.
Beef and lamb were followed by onion with 17.2 percent, white cabbage with 17 percent and green pepper with 13 percent.
The product whose price decreased the most in the market was tomato with 27.1 percent.
The decrease in tomato prices is eggplant with 21 percent, cauliflower with 20.2 percent and 13.2 percent with 13.2 percent.

THE PRICE OF 25 OF 39 PRODUCTS INCREASED IN RAMADAN
Looking at prices in the 14-day period from the price research conducted by TZOB before Ramadan (March 17, 2023) to the end of March; price on 25 of 39 products on the market

Bayraktar said: “In this 14-day period, the highest price increase in the market was in lamb meat with 16 percent. The increase in the price of lamb meat increased by 15% for beef, 12.6% for dry beans and 11.4 percent.

During this period, the largest price decrease in the market was in raisins with 12.4 percent.

Stating that tobacco and planted areas were damaged in Adıyaman, and grain fields and fruit and vegetable orchards were damaged in Şanlıurfa, Bayraktar said, “While greenhouses were damaged, beehives were flooded and animals were destroyed. Excessive rain and hail also caused extensive damage in Gaziantep and Kilis.

“There was damage to cereal, legume, vegetable and fruit orchards. Stating that the leaves and stems broke off in barley, wheat, and lentils, Bayraktar continued:
“Due to the rain, there will be injuries to the almond tree branches, especially plum, apricot, walnut, peanut and olive trees, while there will be yield losses due to spillage on the fruit buds.
The floods also damaged ranching businesses. The losses of our growers who suffered losses must be compensated and their loan debts must be postponed”.
