Penalty from Turkey to WhatsApp and Goal

Fine of 2.6 million liras from the Personal Data Protection Board to WhatsApp and Meta

The Personal Data Protection Board (KVKK) imposed an administrative fine of 2 million 665 thousand liras each on WhatsApp and Meta for failing to comply with the obligation to register in the Registry of Data Controllers.

The Board determined that Meta and WhatsApp, which process the personal data of relevant persons in Turkey and are subject to the provisions of the Personal Data Protection Law, within the scope of the ex officio review it initiated, failed to comply with this obligation in in a timely manner, without prejudice to the obligation to register in the Register of Treatment Managers.

For this reason, the Personal Data Protection Board, which ruled that Meta and WhatsApp separately be fined 2 million 665 thousand lira, also decided to instruct Meta and WhatsApp to comply with the obligation to register within 30 days. (AA)
