Increase of food products before Ramadan
The rain of increases accelerated after the implementation of fixed prices announced by the market chains, where the economic administration applied pressure and fines to control food inflation.
While price increases for meat and dairy products, which producers warned about, are based on 60 percent, onion, the main kitchen product, has risen 45.4 percent since January, reaching the limit of 20 TL.
In January, in response to Finance Minister Nureddin Nebati’s “pricing and discount” call, many grocery chains announced that they had fixed prices on thousands of products for a month.
In food, which broke a record with a monthly increase of 7.36 percent in February, annual inflation is at the level of 69.33 percent, according to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK).
In the TUIK inflation data for February, the product with the highest price increase was the group of vegetables with 24.56 percent, and a monthly increase of 10.47 percent was announced in fruits.

Red meat stands out in the list of products whose prices have increased enormously in the last two months. Sector officials pointed out that many animals were slaughtered due to the low price they gave the producer, especially for milk, and gave signs of this crisis. The price of cubed meat, which was TL 197.43 in January, increased to TL 314 starting this week. On the other hand, the price per kilogram of lamb meat, which was 218 TL, increased to 325 TL.
CITIZENS ARE HARD THAN JANUARY
Noting that prices increased during the pricing campaign, CHP Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Councilor Nadir Ataman said, “Now when we went to the same markets, there was a 90 percent increase in 1000 products. Are our people, who were in trouble in January, in a better situation now? On the contrary, it is even more difficult”. Emphasizing that the criminal sanctions imposed on chain stores are also not working, Ataman said that “after May 14, all businesses will become institutions that work in favor of citizens, not excessive profits.”
