The earthquake caused 11.2 billion lira of damage in the energy sector.

In the report prepared by the Presidency of Strategy and Budget after the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş and Hatay, it was calculated that 11,243 million liras of damage were produced in the energy sector, according to the first determinations.

According to the Presidency Report on the Kahramanmaraş and Hatay earthquakes, it is estimated that a total of 11.243 billion liras of damage was caused to the energy sector, of which 2.3 billion was from the public and 8.9 billion from the private sector . due to earthquake disaster.

According to the report, there was extensive damage to electricity distribution lines and transformation centers in the region, especially in Hatay, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş and Adıyaman provinces.

As a result of the earthquake, 11 poles connecting the 1,128-kilometre-long power transmission line belonging to the Turkish Electricity Corporation (TEİAŞ) collapsed, causing damage to the transformer station and equipment with a total power of 4,088 megavolt-amperes.

As a result of the preliminary surveys carried out after the two earthquakes in the Pazarcık and Elbistan districts of Kahramanmaraş on February 6 and the earthquakes in the Yayladağı district of Hatay on February 20, a total of 717 million TL was generated in electricity transmission facilities belonging to TEİAŞ in 11 provinces A total of 7.867 million lira were damaged in the distribution facilities.

20 EXPLOSIONS AND BREAKDOWNS AT BOTAŞ TRANSMISSION POINTS

Due to the earthquakes, explosions and failures occurred in the natural gas transmission lines of Pipelines and Petrol Taşıma AŞ (BOTAŞ) at around 20 different points, while damage to natural gas distribution lines and facilities was detected in the region.

As a result of damage assessment studies by BOTAŞ and related distribution companies operating in the region, it was estimated that 180.5 million TL of damage occurred to natural gas transmission lines and facilities, and 646, 4 million TL in natural gas distribution lines. Minor damage was detected in the region’s crude oil pipelines.

355 MILLION TL DAMAGE TO FUEL FACILITIES

The estimated size of the damage to some buildings, transformers and power plant switchyards at electricity generation facilities belonging to Elektrik Üretim AŞ (EÜAŞ) was estimated at 517.5 million lira.

Damage to privately operated power generation facilities was recorded at 52.5 million lira. Damage to some fuel stations and storage facilities in the region was determined to amount to approximately 355 million lira.

The report indicated that there are 732 mining operation permits in the earthquake zone, 68 of them work with the underground mining method and there are temporary pauses in mining activities throughout the region.

It was reported that 2.7 million lira was damaged in the structures of the oil production facility in Adıyaman, which belongs to the Turkish Petroleum Corporation.

Thus, according to the first determinations, a total of 11 thousand 243 million liras of damages in the energy sector was calculated.

POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS

In the report, evaluation of damage and performance of lines and facilities in the earthquake zone in the short term, and their suitability to be determined immediately, necessary maintenance and repairs, necessary inspections in power generation plants, transmission lines and Gas distribution, facilities and fuel stations, maintenance and necessary repairs are indicated in the report. policy recommendations such as

In the medium term, it was suggested that mobile solar plants, independent of the grid and integrated with battery storage systems, should be designed and configured in disaster risk areas.

In order to ensure the continuity of natural gas supply, make investments in underground storage facilities, FSRU pier and connection line, strengthen the compressed natural gas supply infrastructure in disaster areas and build the necessary infrastructure, increasing resilience seismic of underground fuel tanks and connection. points, feeding the areas affected by disasters in emergency situations elaboration of a plan and program for the supply of electrical energy, taking into account the probability that these plants will be affected by disasters and their distance to the fault lines during the evaluation of the power generation plants that are likely to be established in potential disaster areas, increase periodic inspections of dams with measuring devices according to the type, location and seismic characteristics of the dams, monitoring was also among the recommendations in the medium term .

In the long term, the report includes the preparation of long-term disaster power supply plans for seismic zones, the importance of including mobile renewable power plants and integrated battery storage facilities in these plans, digitization of all elements in the energy value chain, especially consumers, and increasing the resilience of energy infrastructure against cyber security attacks policy recommendations such as (BRITISH AUTOMOBILE CLUB)
