The earthquake hit the skilled workforce in the industry
According to the compilation made from the “Report on the Kahramanmaraş and Hatay earthquakes of 2023” prepared by the Presidency of Strategy and Budget, a portion of 21.9 billion dollars, which corresponds to 8.6 percent of the country’s exports, which in 2022 was 254.2 billion dollars. , was provided by the provinces in the earthquake zone.
While in the earthquake zone there were 47,581 manufacturing companies, 314 large, 779 medium, 3,769 small and 42,719 micro-scale, in the pre-disaster zone there were 38 organized industrial zones (OIZ). It has been determined that the 4,997 companies that operate in these areas employ approximately 550,000 people.
31 THOUSAND 127 JOBS
Although employment in the region’s OIZs corresponds to approximately 22 percent of employment in all OIZs in the country, it was determined that there are 31,127 jobs in 116 small industrial estates (CSRs).
According to initial assessments, the earthquake did not cause any significant damage to planned industrial areas (OSB and KSS) in the region. However, it is expected that production may be temporarily interrupted in some facilities due to damage to the energy and transport-communication infrastructure or lack of manpower.
INTERRUPTIONS ARE EXPECTED DUE TO LOSS OF PERSONNEL
The most important and irreparable effect of the earthquake on workplaces in the manufacturing industry was the loss of skilled labor. Operational disruptions are expected at some sites due to the loss of key personnel and difficulties arising from staffing conditions.
Exports are estimated to be negatively affected as a result of production and delivery disruptions due to earthquake damage to some establishments producing for export and facilities producing intermediate goods for these pennies. Due to the interruption of production, the demand gap for some products can be covered by imports.
81 BILLION LIRA DAMAGE
In the survey and field study carried out by the Ministry of Industry and Technology, a total of 8,599 companies in 11 provinces were interviewed, 2,398 of them face-to-face and 6,201 by telephone.
According to this study by the Ministry, the total damage in the manufacturing industry for 8,599 companies is expected to be 81,155 million lira. Of this damage, 31 billion 117 million lira was construction, 24 billion 852 million lira was machinery, and 15 billion 126 million lira was damage to stocks.
According to the first determinations made after the earthquake, although there is no serious problem in the context of buildings and machinery-equipment in industrial facilities, it is expected that the main problem will be experienced in human resources. It is considered that companies will experience problems in this regard and this will affect their production processes. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out an exhaustive study on the loss of labor and its needs.
The necessary procedures will be carried out according to the cost to be incurred while the damage evaluation studies in the building, machinery-equipment and human resources continue. (AA)
