616 higher risk hospitals
After the schools, the Chamber of Geological Engineers (JMO) also identified hospitals and family health centers at high seismic risk. Having identified 4,159 schools with high seismic risk in its previous report, the JMO determined that 616 hospitals were located in areas that could generate devastating earthquakes. According to JMO, 163 of the hospitals with high earthquake risk are located in Istanbul. Also, 45 hospitals in İzmir and approximately 40 hospitals in Manisa continue their activities under high risk of earthquake. According to the JMO scientific study, 196 out of 616 hospitals are at very high risk, while 92 hospitals are at much higher risk.
1 IN 4 HOSPITALS IS RISKY
Within the scope of the JMO study, 2,420 hospitals and health centers built after 2019 and located in the areas of greatest seismic risk were examined. By testing these hospitals in 3 different scenarios based on the highest destructive power acceleration values, JMO determined that the number of hospitals that will face a devastating earthquake with an acceleration value of 0.40 g and above is 616. Consequently, at least 1 in 4 hospitals built after 2019 across the country are at high risk of earthquakes.
According to the report prepared by JMO, 196 hospitals are at risk of an earthquake with an acceleration value of 0.50 g and above, which has a more destructive effect; There are 92 hospitals at risk of an earthquake with an acceleration value of 0.60 g and above. The report stated that 14 hospitals will face very large earthquakes with extraordinary acceleration values such as 0.68g and 0.75g.

By inviting the Ministry of Health on the issue of hospitals at risk, the JMO administration demanded that the ministry review all health facilities, taking into account the order of priority on this issue. Authorities demanded that health facility buildings built in geologically objectionable areas with weak engineering features and those within the fault containment band be demolished and moved to safer areas. The JMO stressed that public and private hospitals in other areas should also be reviewed.
