Frost risk on early flowering apricot trees in Malatya
In Malatya, which was affected by the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş, apricot trees, which are the most important source of income for farmers, flourished for about 10 days.
In Malatya, where 85% of the world’s dried apricot production is produced, the apricot trees surrounding the Karakaya Dam lake in the Kale district have flourished.
Local farmers started digging around the flowering trees.
Nihat Mum, one of the farmers working in the apricot orchard at Bahri Mahallesi, said: “Early flowering can have both a disadvantage and an advantage. If it is cold, the flowers can burn, frost can occur and the crop suffers, ”he said.
RISK OF EXCESSIVE DROP IN AIR TEMPERATURE
Yeşilyurt Chamber of Agriculture Chairman Doğan Solmaz stated that the most important value of Malatya’s economy is the apricot and that the trees bloom 10 days earlier than in previous years.
Noting that the extreme drop in air temperature will have negative effects as long as the flowers turn into a waterfall, Solmaz said, “Not now, but the extreme drop in air temperature can pose a risk. If the weather drops to minus 1 degree or below, you can get burned while on the apricot branch. Our hope is that nothing like this happens after this time.” saying.
Solmaz pointed out that the fumigation work in the gardens should begin shortly and asked the authorized institutions to provide support to the producers affected by the earthquake. (AA)
